Yes — I’d say it’s worth reading, especially if you enjoy serial-killer thrillers, police procedurals, and K-9/dog characters.
In the Killer’s Sight is the first book in Mike Omer’s new Kate Marino series. The story follows K-9 officer Kate Marino, whose teenage niece disappears, forcing Kate to return to the hometown—and traumatic past—she left behind. She searches the New Hampshire wilderness with her police dogs while a serial killer continues hunting women.
It’s not universally loved. Some readers felt the middle was slow, the ending was too abrupt, and the chapters from the dogs’ perspectives were either delightful or distracting, depending on the reader. A few also found Kate less compelling initially.
When 17-year-old Alice, Kate Marino’s niece, suddenly disappears, Kate has no choice but to return to Cooperton, New Hampshire—the hometown she escaped years ago because of painful childhood experiences.
But Alice isn’t the only woman who has gone missing.
As evidence begins to connect the disappearances to a serial killer stalking women through the New Hampshire wilderness, Kate joins forces with Deputy Sheriff Roy Hoover. With her K-9 partners Nero and Bella, she begins searching for Alice before the killer can reach her.
The investigation becomes increasingly personal as Kate is forced to confront the town, her troubled family history, and secrets surrounding the victims. The deeper she digs, the more she realizes that finding Alice isn’t simply a race against a killer—it’s also a confrontation with the past she tried to leave behind.
In one line: A K-9 officer returns to the traumatic hometown she fled to find her missing niece—only to discover that a serial killer is hunting women in the surrounding wilderness.

Overall: ⭐⭐⭐⭐½ / 5
A strong thriller with compelling characters, excellent chemistry, and a surprisingly emotional core. The pacing isn’t perfect, but the character relationships and emotional stakes make up for it.
The K-9 element.
Nero and Bella aren’t simply background animals—they have genuine personalities and are an important part of Kate’s life and the investigation. The dog scenes are easily one of the book’s most distinctive features.
Kate’s emotional journey.
Her return to the town she escaped from gives the thriller a strong emotional layer. Her difficult relationship with her father and the effects of her childhood trauma make the investigation feel personal rather than simply procedural.
The mystery.
There are plenty of suspects and red herrings, and several readers praised Omer for making the clues feel plausible rather than simply withholding information from the reader.
The atmosphere.
The New Hampshire wilderness is an excellent setting for this kind of story. There’s something particularly effective about combining isolated woods, missing women, tracking dogs, and an unseen predator.
The emotional stakes.
Alice’s disappearance gives Kate a very personal reason to keep pushing, while the family storyline adds another layer of tension.
The biggest weakness for me would be the uneven pacing.
The beginning and investigation can occasionally feel slower than the premise suggests, particularly when the story moves away from the actual case and into family details. Several readers independently mentioned slower sections.
The dog POV chapters will also be divisive. Some readers absolutely loved them; others found the anthropomorphism distracting or too cute for a dark thriller.
And the ending is reportedly quite abrupt. That’s probably my biggest structural criticism: after spending so much time developing the investigation, the conclusion can feel like it arrives very quickly.
Kate is the heart of the novel.
She’s a widowed police officer, mother, and K-9 handler who has to balance her professional responsibilities with the disappearance of her niece and her complicated relationship with her hometown.
What makes her interesting is that she’s not simply a brilliant detective who has everything together. She’s carrying grief, childhood trauma, anger, and family baggage.
Some readers found her difficult to connect with initially, while others thought she became increasingly compelling as the story progressed.
Honestly? Nero steals the show.
He’s Kate’s younger K-9 partner and brings some warmth and personality to an otherwise dark story.
Bella is Kate’s retired K-9 partner, and she provides a different dynamic from Nero. The contrast between the experienced older dog and the younger working dog is particularly enjoyable.
Roy works alongside Kate in the investigation and adds another layer to the story. He’s also where much of the potential romantic chemistry comes from.
The supporting characters help create the feeling of a small town where everyone has history, secrets, or opinions about Kate.
This is where I’d add an important disclaimer:
This is NOT a romance novel.
The romance is secondary to the serial-killer investigation.
That said, the chemistry between Kate and Roy works surprisingly well. There’s attraction, mutual respect, and the sense that they’re two adults who understand the pressures of law enforcement.
The relationship isn’t the main event, which actually makes it more enjoyable for me. It doesn’t completely take over the thriller.
However, some readers felt the romantic connection developed too quickly or wasn’t sufficiently developed, so if you’re specifically picking this up for romance, you may find yourself wanting more.
Low-to-moderate romance / high chemistry
So:
🔥 Chemistry: 5/5
💋 On-page romance: 2.5–3/5
❤️ Emotional connection: 4/5
If you want romance as a subplot, great.
If you want romance to drive the story, this probably isn’t the book for you.
Spice: 🌶️ 1/5
This is not a spicy romance.
The book’s focus is crime, suspense, family trauma, and the investigation. The romantic component is comparatively restrained.
Be aware of:
The killer’s perspective can be particularly disturbing because the narrative explores how he rationalizes his actions.
One reader specifically noted that the book wasn’t especially gory, which may make it more accessible to readers who prefer thriller suspense over graphic violence.
I’d describe it as:
Slow → steady → increasingly tense → intense
It’s not necessarily a book that maintains maximum adrenaline from page one.
The investigation takes time to develop, and some family-related sections slow things down. But once the clues begin accumulating, the momentum improves significantly.
The writing itself is accessible and easy to read, which makes the roughly 350-page length feel manageable.
The biggest stylistic gamble is the anthropomorphized dog POV. If you’re a dog person, you may adore it. If you prefer strict realism, you may find it jarring.
Satisfying, but abrupt.
The mystery does reach a proper conclusion, and readers generally found the investigation’s payoff satisfying.
However, the actual ending happens quite quickly, which is probably my biggest criticism of the book. Multiple readers specifically mentioned the abruptness.
The good news?
It clearly leaves room for Kate’s story to continue.
And since this is Book 1 of the Kate Marino series, that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
I’d recommend it if you enjoy:
Especially if you’re a dog lover, I’d put this near the top of your thriller TBR.
You might want to skip it if you:
The police-procedure aspects also require some suspension of disbelief; at least one advance reader found Kate’s involvement in the investigation unrealistic.
If you liked the female detective + serial killer + emotional trauma combination, I’d look at:
Look specifically for K-9 police procedurals / dog-handler mysteries—that’s the aspect that makes In the Killer’s Sight stand out from the more conventional serial-killer thrillers.
And if you enjoy Mike Omer’s style, his Zoe Bentley and Abby Mullen thriller series are natural next stops.
No. It’s primarily a crime/serial-killer thriller with a romantic subplot.
Not really. Expect chemistry and romance rather than explicit spice.
I’d call it tense and disturbing rather than horror-level terrifying.
Not excessively. The psychological aspects of the killer can be more disturbing than the actual gore.
Very. Nero and Bella are among the most memorable characters in the book.
Yes. 🐕❤️
It’s the first book in the Kate Marino series, so expect Kate’s story to continue.
This seems to vary by reader. Some readers said the mystery kept them guessing until the reveal, while others figured it out early.
Yes—especially if you like crime thrillers with K-9s and emotional character arcs.
⭐ 4.5/5
In the Killer’s Sight isn’t reinventing the serial-killer thriller, but it adds enough personality to the formula to make it stand out.
The combination of Kate + the K-9s + the wilderness investigation + family trauma + romantic chemistry gives the story considerably more emotional depth than a straightforward police procedural.
Its biggest weaknesses are the uneven pacing, occasionally questionable police-procedural logic, divisive dog POV chapters, and abrupt ending.
But the strengths outweigh them.
Mystery: ⭐⭐⭐⭐½
Suspense: ⭐⭐⭐⭐½
Characters: ⭐⭐⭐⭐½
Dogs: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Romance: ⭐⭐⭐⭐½ chemistry / ⭐⭐⭐ actual romance
Emotional impact: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Spice: 🌶️
Ending: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Overall: ⭐⭐⭐⭐½
Bottom line: If you want a gripping serial-killer thriller with a strong female lead, lovable K-9 partners, emotional depth, and just enough romance to add chemistry without taking over the plot, this is absolutely worth adding to your TBR.
